Okay folks, if you haven’t heard already, here comes the fucking coolest thing to hit Denver probably ever: SUMMER GRIND Skate and Punk Music Festival! Summer Grind is Denver’s very own festival, not some touring thing or some festival that started on a coast and slowly trickled into the Rockies. No. This right here is our very own shit. Born and bred in the Mile High City!

So, not only is it cool that the festival is a Denver thing, its also cool that this festival is going to be completely bad-ass. From the fact that, oh yeah, LEFTOVER CRACK and THE DWARVES are headlining the whole thing, to the half-pipe and local brews and phenomenal line-up of Denver’s best bands & skaters, this thing is just going to be killer.

It is all going down SATURDAY SEPT 1st, at the Gothic and Moe’s starting at 3pm. Outside will be the “Headed West Vendor Village” selling lots of cool stuff next to the “Westword Local’s Outdoor Stage.” Also outside is the halfpipe, sponsored by Thrifty Stick Board Shop, showcasing skate teams from the Front Range, as well as some cool live painting. Here is the lineup for the Westword Outdoor Stage:
Skyfox, Frontside 5
Ska Skank Redemption, The Dendrites, Loaded 45, The Atom Age, Elway

The outdoor bar is going to be serving up some excellent Colorado brews by The Breckenridge Brewery. Breckenridge Brewery is the sponsor for the stage inside Moes (4:30 pm-11:30 pm), and here is the lineup for that:
Speedwolf, Stolen Babies
Allout Helter, Knock-Out, Anchor Point, Orphans, Captain Blood, and The Ruckus.

You better get your tickets FAST because they are going to SELL OUT!! Punks are coming in from states all around to party with us!!!

FULL LINE UP (* - Just Announced):
Leftover Crack
The Dwarves
Stolen Babies
Potato Pirates
The Atom Age*
Frontside 5
Synthetic Elements
The A-OK's
Glass Delirium
Allout Helter
King Rat*
Anchor Point
The Dendrites
Loaded 45*
Ska Skank Redemption
Sinnin’ Saints*
The Ruckus*
Captain Blood*

FREE Real McKenzies Set Next Weekend

posted Jun 13, 2012, 9:14 PM by Kio Krofovitch   [ updated Jun 13, 2012, 9:23 PM ]

Real McKenzies play Larimer Lounge, May 29 2012

Yes, you read that correct.  I know, right. I've only been waiting like 10 years to see them live, and then they come to the Larimer Lounge and just a few weeks later are playing a free show in Cheyenne, WY!?  You'd be crazy to miss this.  Because this isn't just a free Real McKenzies show. It is a whole weekend celebration of Celtic culture!

It is the 7th Annual Cheyenne Celtic Festival, and its going on Friday June 22 - Sunday June 24 at Depot Square in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  The Real McKenzies take the stage at 6:30 pm on Saturday, but there are tons more bands playing all day, as well as other general awesome stuff.   Other performers are Potcheen and Delilah's Revenge, who I had the privilege of hearing for the first time at the Denver People's Fair a few weekends ago.

Proceeds from things purchased at the festival will benefit the Cheyenne Depot Museum which is a 501(c)3 non-profit that hosts free community events during the summer on Depot Plaza.

Find more information on all the fun stuff here.

Finally I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Kalena for submitting this show on our "Submit Your Show" page!  I would have never known about this amazing party otherwise.  See you all there!

UK Punks Reflect on Diamond Jubilee

posted May 17, 2012, 8:10 AM by Kio Krofovitch   [ updated May 17, 2012, 8:11 AM ]

I came across this interesting article on the BBC yesterday, and wanted to share it with you.  It takes a look at a few UK punks who were coming of age in 1977, the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee, and interviews them about their feelings on the upcoming Diamond Jubilee.  It was a fun read, and good to see that (spoiler alert) they all stay true to their roots.  Check it out here.

"Punk Passage" Photography Show in Denver

posted Mar 28, 2012, 7:36 AM by Kio Krofovitch   [ updated Mar 28, 2012, 7:38 AM ]

Just found out about this cool photography show hosted by the Colorado Photographic Arts Center (CPAC), running March 29 - May 12:

Punk Passage: California and Beyond, 1977-1981 will be shown at CPAC alongside Mining Denver’s Underground Rock Photography: seldom seen scenes in local music, an exhibition of new Denver music photography curated by Cinthea Fiss.

There is more information on their website here.  CPAC is located at 445 South Saulsbury St., Lakewood, CO 80226.  The Gallery is open Tuesday- Saturday 12-5:30pm.  There seems to be no admission, just donations.  Also, if you are a member, CPAC is hosting a Members Only Preview Reception on Thursday March 29 from 5-6pm.  The reception will be open to the public at 6pm.  It will run from 6-9pm, featuring live music by Fritz Fox of The Mutants.

Also, there is a special event on Saturday the 31st at 1pm, where the photographers are giving a presentation about their photos and experiences.  This costs $10 ($5 for members).  If you want to receive a portfolio critique as well, the admission goes up to $25 ($15 for members).  What a deal!  Here is a little info about the special event from the CPAC site:

Punk Passage photographer Ruby Ray joins curator/photographer Richard Peterson and curator/media artist Cinthea Fiss for an afternoon of presentations related to their punk rock photography and experiences with the San Francisco and Denver music scenes. Photographers showing in the Mining Denver Rock Photography show, curated by Cinthea Fiss at CPAC, will also be present to talk about their work. Attendees are invited to have their own music photography portfolios reviewed by the speakers after the presentations (Limit 12, surcharge applies).

Information about the Gallery Talk can be found here.

I am really looking forward to seeing some great works about the punk rock culture.

Flogging Molly Postpones Show & Cheap Tix for Rev / Cash'd Out

posted Dec 2, 2011, 7:20 AM by Kio Krofovitch

I just got word that Flogging Molly will not be able to make the Dec. 6 "Not So Silent Night" show with Rise Against in Broomfield at the the 1stBank Center.  The wife of drummer George Schwindt will need to deliver their baby prematurely, due to unforeseen circumstances.  Because of this, Flogging Molly has cancelled upcoming shows in the US, as the drummer goes to be with his family.  Sending good vibes their way, that everything goes smoothly and baby and mom are going to be okay.

Flogging Molly plans to reschedule their performance in Denver at the Ogden Theater on March 14, on the Green 17 tour.  Tickets will go on sale for this concert at 10am here on Friday December 9 (if you are a Channel 93.3 member).  If you don't know about it, being a Channel 93.3. member is free, you just have to sign up here.  There aren't a whole lot of details about the March 14th show yet, but I will be sure to post as soon as I find anything out.

If you are interested, the official press release about all this from Flogging Molly is located here, courtesy of Channel 93.3.

On a lighter note, tickets for the Reverend Horton Heat's latest Denver show are currently on sale here at the very discounted price of $9.33.  The show is at the Ogden Theater on January 28 (my birthday, woohoo!).  At some point the "early bird ticket price" will go away and become $20 / $25 DOS, but I don't actually know when that just buy them now.

Also, Cash'd Out (The Ultimate Johnny Cash Tribute band) is going to be playing a show at the Bluebird Theater on Saturday, Feb 4.  Tickets are normally $15 ($18 DOS), but if you buy them here starting tomorrow they are only $10!  Again, not sure when this "early bird ticket price" ends.

New Punk Record Store & Bouncing Souls Denver Invasion

posted Sep 2, 2011, 10:14 AM by Kio Krofovitch

I got an email the other day from the Submit Your Show Page about a free punk show to celebrate the opening of a new punk record store: Growler!  The show is this Saturday (tomorrow) at the Yellow Feather Coffee shop which is in the Santa Fe Arts District.  The record store is setup in the back of the coffee shop, in an awesome local business partnership scheme. I found this neat article about the history of this "new" record store from the Westword.  The show starts at 4pm, and its free and all-ages.

If you want even more info, here is the Growler Record site, and here is the Yellow Feather Coffee shop site.  I love when local businesses can get together and create something awesome like this. Hope you all can make it out!

Also, I just got word that Bouncing Souls will be playing in Denver. At the Marquis. FOUR NIGHTS IN A ROW! Unbelievable. AND there is a different amazing line-up for each night! Check it out:

11.02 w/ Youth Brigade and Wet Witch
11.03 w/ Riverboat Gamblers and Broken Gold
11.04 w/ Broadway Calls, The Architects, and Luther
11.05 w/ Teenage Bottlerocket and Heart And Soul Radio

Tickets go on sale today, and are just $18 or $20 Day-Of-Show.  Of course, since it is at the Marquis, its also all ages... So now its just a question of how many nights of awesome my wallet can handle....

Chelsea Hotel in New York Closes to Guests

posted Aug 5, 2011, 9:44 AM by Kio Krofovitch

I came across this article on the NY Times a few days ago, and wanted to share it with you all in case you were unaware.  Its definitely the end of an era for this historic building.  At least the full-time tenants can stay... for now at least.

Read the full article here on the NY Times website.
